The Client’s Brief

  • Traditional shaker kitchen to blend with their modern extension
  • Feature mantle above range cooker
  • Belfast sink
  • Shelved pantry storage
  • Island with Breakfast bar to seat 3 people
  • Feature wine cooler

The client first came to the showroom with an image of a kitchen they had seen on our website which enabled us to understand the desired look required from the outset.

The key elements to ensure that the design met the clients brief were strongly focused on the functional aspects of a working kitchen. Traditionalist cooking requires an efficient heavy duty range cooker and Belfast sink for example, so these would become two main elements in our design.

Our Solution

The main challenge when the kitchen space is set between two sets of doorways (in this case the side door and the bi-folds) is how to create a spacious kitchen with plenty of usable worktop, whilst also considering placement of high level storage units.

Initially, the idea of incorporating an American Fridge was considered by the client, however the decision was made to go for an integrated fridge freezer instead so that we could both soften the look with integrated fronts but more importantly free up extra wall space for the most important feature mantle above the range cooker.

We designed a large L-Shape kitchen with an island. The perimeter units were placed to align the island worktops throughout. On the left-hand side of the sink run the worktop aligns with the outer edges of the island and to the right-hand side housing the range cooker, the worktop also aligns the island precisely. Sometime it’s hard to see on plan just how visually pleasing it is when the edges of the worktop align perfectly. I think this is a classic example of how great it can look when you design with such attention to detail!

The chosen worktop was a stunning piece of ‘River Valley White’ granite which features a lovely flowing vein that creates a gentle feel of calmness. The numerous colours and tones within the granite give plenty of scope to be adventurous. In this instance, to compliment the raspberry chips featured in the granite, our client chose red accessories throughout the kitchen to include the bread bin, Kenwood mixer (a real designer statement in its designated niche), oven gloves and wallpaper to the soft seating area. Alongside, the pearlescent flakes of silver pearl and subtle gold flecks enhance the ‘Beach Pebble’ paint colour on the kitchen cabinetry chosen by our client.

Granite splashbacks line the inner mantle and were a last-minute upgrade by our client. Initially, they had planned to tile the area but we feel the use of granite has given the whole kitchen a totally luxurious feel.

A pantry cupboard between the sink window and the bi-fold doors was made to a bespoke depth in a conscious effort to keep the kitchen open to the rest of the room. Our client loved this as it gave overflow storage whilst not imposing itself on either the kitchen or dining space. As a result, light flows into the kitchen area and views to the garden are not restricted.

The window on the sink run was fractionally moved as part of our design to ensure the sink and tap could be centred to the new opening. Our client was happy to invest in this alteration as they saw the benefit of such detail and its importance as part of the design.

Drawer boxes were neatly lined with solid wood inserts for neat storage of pots, pans and crockery and to compliment the Belfast Sink, we suggested taps with ceramic levered handles.

Our client was so thrilled with their kitchen - their recommendations have resulted in three other clients travelling on their journey with us. They too have their kitchens safely installed by our team and it’s a fantastic feeling all round!
